A Journey Through Time

Under Japanese occupation parts of Shanghai became lawless and, for those with money, a non-stop party. Map of the blockaded area adapted from Paul French's book 'City of Devils' including Japanese control points and the best joints for a night out in the Badlands, 1941.

SPA Bathroom

Long cable waterproof switch turns on light. Shorter cable waterproof switch shuts off bathroom sockets when hanging free as in picture above.

The short cable switch controls the plugs behind the washing basin. Put the switch in this position to use the plugs.

SPA hose.

Tropical rain and mist shower heads.

The wall hung toilet is kept open to educate local workers.

The bidet shower has warm water of the same temperature as the other outlets.

Mix hot (red) and cold (blue) water centrally for all outlets here. The (formerly installed) yellow valve controls the water flow to the bidet shower (now always open).

Lock the bathroom door as often as possible. Some neighbors are just waiting to sneak in and use a clean toilet or even take a shower.

A short time after completion, it turned out that all valves are of substandard quality (although the seller told otherwise) and started leaking or had other issues.
As a result, I installed one new main valve, labeled A. This and only here is where to open and close the water flow.
Valves labeled D are useful for balancing the water pressure between different outlets during taking a shower only.
Blue and red valves C only close if you turn them clockwise really strong. And they open within the first full turn - any further rotation has no effect.
Important: Make sure to fully close the blue valve to guarantee that the boiler starts.

Laundry Instructions

Washing machine is below this table. Connect the waste water pipe and you're ready to go. Don't forget to disconnect the pipe afterwards.

Take the wastewater outlet.

Connect to the counterpart below the sink.

Fill the drum with clothes and powder. For whites use bleach ('84' brand, white bottle, in every suppermarket). During operation the machine should be closed although an open lid doesn't stop the machine. Don't reach into the rotating drum.

First press the blue button to the right, then the large green button to start the washing cycle.

When it's raining or in winter you might dry your clothes inside the studio on these two clothes rails.

Inside the studio you will find four keys for [red] the South corridor with access to fuses, [pink] the window lock, [green] the bathroom and [white] the main entrance door (the same as you find hanging outside). Do not forget to lock the bathroom before you leave.

From time to time the entrance door is locked. That's when you want to make use of the hidden key.

After use, hide the key properly as shown here. Avoid neighbors watching you while using the hidden key.

The hiden key is on a thin retractable cord. Make sure not to break the sensitive mechanism.
